STNG NEWS ALERTS ::
Megan Bassett (from left), her sister Danielle Gerds, Cathy Wikert, of New Lenox, and Keri Johnson, keep cool Thursday afternoon as they await the Jimmy Buffett concert at Toyota Park in Bridgeview. (Art Vassy/SouthtownStar)
The carnival atmosphere outside Toyota Park in Bridgeview Thursday afternoon resembled a hippie commune in palpable anticipation for the evening's Jimmy Buffett concert. The relaxed, if not slightly-buzzed crowd aimed to make Buffett's songs of island paradise and sheer bliss a reality in the asphalt jungle outside the soccer field and concert venue. There is food, there is drink (lots of drinks, mostly margaritas), and the only competition among the new friends is in bean bag.

Would-be thief tries trick in credit card scheme
A would-be thief climbed on the roof of a Tinley Park gas station to disable a credit card satellite transmitter with a piece of aluminum foil, hoping to then go inside and fraudulently charge goodies.

Something to talk about »
Mike Pindelski's alarm clock goes off at 5:45 a.m. every weekday. He fixes his golden bedspread while his wife, Lisa, takes a shower in their comfortable four-bedroom home on a cul-de-sac in Orland Park. Some might quibble over the details, but the statistics say the Pindelskis are average. And Mike is happy with that.

Are you a winner? »
Find yourself on SouthtownStar.com
Every day through Aug. 28, two people will find themselves in the SouthtownStar and on SouthtownStar.com. When they do, they'll each win a $50 gift card from Walt's Food Center. If your face is circled, you're a winner. But that's not all. Each week, one gift card winner also will receive a key qualifying them for the grand prize: a car.

Bears laying it on the line

The spotlight in Bears training camp is on the quarterback derby, but two days in, coach Lovie Smith was begging to talk about anything else.

An upper (Cubs win) and a downer (Wood on DL)

Kerry Wood is on the disabled list again, but Cubs honchos insist the move that looked inevitable for several days isn't a big deal, and they remain hopeful the All-Star closer will return from the DL on his first eligible day, Tuesday at Milwaukee - even though nobody seems to be able to explain why a blister expected to heal last week is taking this long in the first place.

Sox know they can't get tripped on trip

The White Sox used to make Comerica Park their home away from home ---their own, personal "U.S. Cellular Field East" - a place they could go for three or four days, kick up their feet and try to make the best out of spending time in Detroit.
