At times uncomfortable, awkward and unnerving, mammograms are part of life for women throughout the Southland every year. Get in line, some hospitals say. At Northwestern Memorial Hospital, for example, women are waiting eight months. Here in the Southland, however, women who can shop around may find little or no wait.

Ryan Dempster reaches new deal with Cubs
The Cubs have re-signed free-agent pitcher Ryan Dempster to a four-year contract, the team announced today. Sources say the deal is worth $52 million. Dempster, a 17-game winner and Game 1 playoff starter last season, has been the Cubs’ top offseason priority. Indications are that general manager Jim Hendry might still seek another starting pitcher — possibly free agent Randy Johnson — despite additional pursuits of left-handed hitting.
